Configuring services...

Hi! I have RH7.2 with KDE on P200MMX/128Mb. It works slowly, so I turn off some services such as lpd cause I have no printer, apmd, netfs. Also I want to turn off atd, anacron and crond cause I don't schedul no task, does the system use this daemons for internal purposes? And is it a good idea to turn off sendmail, ipchains and ip tables? May be somebody know other way to enforce the perfomance of my stuff?

Uhmm first step would be to get rid of KDE. Find a smaller windowmanager/desktopenvironment/whatever.
Compile a custom kernel.
If you don't use sendmail I'd definetly turn it off. I'd leave crond chances are it's being used. But it isn't essential so if you really want you could live without it. If you care about security at all it's good to use either ipchains or iptables. Can't use both at the same time anyways.

horner's rule.

sendmail is used internally to deliver mail to /var/spool/mail/username MH mailboxes, if you don't ever use mail the PROPER can remove sendmail safely enough. crond, well crond is tiny, but if you want you'll be fine to stop it, it's probably keeping a few dataase files up to date, but that's nothing you can't do by hand. you can only use one of iptables and ipchains at onetime, and they are used to make firewalls and deal with network routing. if you've no intention of using a firewall, you should be ok to remove them, but then firewalls are nice things... actually i think atd is 95% obselete, as it's been superceded by cron and then anacron.
