Configuring my wireless card
 

I *think* Ive almost got my wireless card working on my Fedora Core 2 laptop. I downloaded and installed DriverLoader from linuxant.com. Ive got an intel pro wireless 2100b, and I loaded the drivers off of the intel site. It seemed to work fine. I got the network manager to recognize my card, and I set up some of the settings, but unfortunately I cant get the card to activate. Whenever I try to activate it, it says "Determining ip information for eth1...." for a minute or two, then just says that it failed.

Ive got it set to obtain an IP via DCHP, Ive got its SSID the same as my router, Ive got my router broadcasting the SSID, Ive got my router using 1 wep encryption key, which is the same as the one my card is using, Ive got the card in managed mode, and Ive got both my router and card on channel 6. Any ideas what might be wrong, or what settings I should change?

I have determined that the problem is because of my encryption Im using. If I disable the encryption, I can connect just fine. Anyone have any idea how I can enable encryption?

I have also had problems getting encryption working from iwconfig command with my Netgear WG311 and my access point!! Everything works fine without encryption.

Are you using driverloader?

I've always had WEP problems with either OS (Windows or Linux) therefore, I would recommend using MAC Filtering and also tell your Router not to broadcast it's SSID. Also if at all possible setup Static DHCP.

Well wouldnt that mean people can still sniff your packets and everything since they arent encrypted?

People can listen to any traffic even if it is encrypted... and even though it's 128-bit or even 256-bit encryption... with the right program it's easy to hack. Once they get into higher bit encryption and the connection problems go away then maybe. So WEP doesn't really do much for you to tell you the truth other than just make it more challenging to decrypt I guess... unless there is a program out there which can do it for you... and I have spoken to friends who have been able to do so.


Besides if they are going through the trouble of packet sniffing then they obviously know about how wireless works and I'm sure the encryption wouldn't be a problem... to the average computer user... packet sniffing isn't even a thought that crosses their mind.
