configuring linux kernel

i have just installed the linux kernel source code of 2.6.12
In my /usr/src/linux-2.6.12 directory I have also a defconfig file, but when I run the "make xconfig" command, I get the error message:

* Unable to find the QT installation. Please make sure that the
* QT development package is correctly installed and the QTDIR
* environment variable is set to the correct location.
make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/.tmp_qtcheck] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

What is QT installation? What should I do to get rid of that error and to be able see the menu window?

Btw, I have also tried "make menuconfig" and the error this time was:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lncurses
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

>> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries.
>> You must install ncurses-devel in order
>> to use 'make menuconfig'

make[2]: *** [scripts/lxdialog/ncurses] Error 1
make[1]: *** [menuconfig] Error 2
make: *** [menuconfig] Error 2

thanks for any help!

well, basically you are missing some software.

qt is for graphics (kde et al). make xconfig will only work if you have X open and the qt software installed.

ncurses allows you to uses menus etc in the terminal.

so you probably just need to install ncurses for "make menuconfig" to work.

i dont know what your distro is, but you'll need to insall /compile that package....
