Configuring internet

Hello to everyone!
I'm new in linux, so my question will be stupid, but i realy don't know.
This is my problem:
I connet to the internet by ethernet card. I have static IP. How to configure my linux? Which files to change? what to change? Everything from begining to the end.
My OS - Berry linux (based on red hat).

If you can use the GUI then go to System Tools>Network Device Control. If it asks for your root password, type it in. You should see your ethernet card listed as eth0. If it is not activated, then click on activate. The system will then try to automatically determine your IP address, If it is successful, your ethernet (eth0) should now be active, You can then go to System Settings>Network and set up your static IP connection and any other network chores (like shares, etc.). Not familiar with the distro you mentioned, but if it is based on Red Hat, these tools should be available in the GUI from eth Gnome or KDE. You can do all of this from the command line as well, but it is more "windows-like" to do it from the desktop.

If you are using a router, then that will be your gateway IP address.

Hope this helps

Thank you, for help!
But what about DNS adress? how to config this... o maybe in linux it's not needed...
And what if system does not automaticly detect my IP?

If you are using a static IP address, you don't need DNS if you are using a router, which you must be if you connect to the net with eth card. If you have to set up the Domain information from your ISP, you do that in System Settings>Network, You basically just fill in the form for the information it needs. You will not be able to activate you ethernet card if the system does not determine your IP information. This is all automatic in Linux. When you are configuring your ethernet card in System Settings>Network, you can tick the box to activate this device on boot.

If you are using an ADSL modem (always on) this should get you up and running on the net when you boot up.

There is a vast amount of information on this topic in this forum and by googling. In this forum, choose to search and use key words for your problem. Has worked for me dozens of times without ever having to post a question. Linux can be scary when you new to it, but believe me, if you stick to it you will figure it out and you will be glad you have Linux

Just to be clear, I have posted a number of questions here and have gotten very excellent help. But I have found that searching myself first and exhausting all the efforts first enables me to ask better questions. Better questions get better asnwers.

Hope this helps
