Configuring AMDGPU / PRO drivers with 390x with Linux Mint

Ok so I upgraded from Linux Mint 17.3 to Linux Mint 18. As you may or may not know, this meant that I needed to switch from the fglrx drivers to the AMDGPU drivers as the fglrx drivers are no longer supported.

So my current problem.

When I load up AMDGPU-PRO drivers, when X11 boots, it stops at a black screen with just a cursor... nothing else. When I uninstall those drivers and just have the AMDGPU drivers... cinnamon only works in fallback mode.

I think i need to configure xorg.conf but am unsure how to with these drivers. Is there a autoconfig setup for these new driver setups? any tips for how to get this to work?

And what makes you think your hardware will work with AMDGPU driver?
