This sounds like a school assignment.
As far as configuring sendmail, there are many guides available on the internet that you can reference. Some of the information is going to depend on the version/distro of Linux you're running (which you don't say anything about). Alot of the configuration options depend on your environment/network/firewall(s)/etc., which you also don't say anything about.
