configure printer how??

hi,
I Want to set up a local dot matrix printer to my linux redhat EL4 machine. But i am a very newbie to configure printer. I dont know weather the printer is even detected or not. anyway it is attached to parallel port so that i think it will be /dev/lp0.
So anybody please give me detail info so that i can get a step by step idea from attaching a printer to configure it.

In your menus (under system administration or something like that) is an item for printing. click on new printer and follow the prompts.
