. /Configure not workin and Synaptic not working
I tried installing flashplayer with ./configure but as I typed it in Terminal it shows "no such directory exists" while I 'm in right directory (I have un tar ed the flashplayer), I tried it with Synaptic Pkg Manager but when I go to add downladed pkges the pkg (flashplayer) appeared un highlighted and can not select it ? My Synaptic doesn't ask for root password when opened please I need to install some CAD software urgentlly so How can I make thiss all install ? (I'm trying to learn installation with flashplayer as it is known and simple)

http://www.linuxcommand.org/index.php http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-G...tml/index.html i am ASSUMING you are running Debian or Ubuntu ???? What is your operating System and version ? is it 32 bit or 64 bit What is your hardware specs ? Did YOU install the os or was it preinstalled when you bought the computer? some more info is needed for us to help. in order to build the source code ------------- ./configure -- prefix=/use - - more options make su make install ---------- you need to have the " Development Tools " and " Development Library's" installed for YOUR operating System and ALL of the prerequisites installed for that program . |
I'm on Debian AMD64 (I installed it by mistake from directly net, it was supposed to be i386 for my processor is Intel dual core, mercury main board, BUT IT IS RUNNING WELL, I think 64 bit is supported on my PC), I done all that "cd" thing and reached exactly to un tar ed folder of flashplayer which has one *.so and one flashplayer installer file, after "cd //home/christian/c/falsh_player"in which above mentioned two files are present I typed "./configure" but it returned with "no such directory exixsts" in Synaptic the flash player (those two files) just doesn't open:mad::cry:
|
Check if you are running configure in the right directory.
|
Always try downloading .deb file for your machine. That will easily do the needful.
Also see http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/flash for further help |
As flash player is not supported for 64 bit I'll try it later, as of learning installation is concerned I'm trying my PICKIT2 but, see what happens
Code:
PC NAME://home/christian/d$ cd //home/christian/d |
cd into flashplayer directory.if you type ls you should see libflashplayer-installer and libflash.so
you can run installer with ./flashplayer-installer as root.or you can just copy the libflash.so to your browser plugins folder... /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins /usr/lib/firefox/plugins /home/urname/.mozilla/plugins you dont use ./configure to install flash player..thats a command you use for building packages from source code just read you have 64 bit... i do believe there is a 64 bit flash player http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/f...tes_64bit.html |
also for that program your trying to compile..did you read the read me's??when you build from sources read the read me's
A Makefile is provided for compiling on several versions of Linux and Mac OS X. Select the system either by uncommenting one of the TARGET options in the Makefile or by specifying the target on the command line. make linux Build for Linux kernel 2.6 make linux-old Build for Linux kernel 2.4 make freebsd Build for FreeBSD (See FREEBSD NOTE below) make mac104 Build for OS X version 10.4 make mac105 Build for OS X version 10.5 After successfully compiling pk2cmd, use su or sudo to run 'make install' as root. The pk2cmd binary will be copied to /usr/local/bin with the 's' permission bit set (necessary for running pk2cmd as a non-root user). The device data file, PK2DeviceFile.dat, will be copied to /usr/share/pk2. If /usr/share/pk2 doesn't already exist, it will be created by running make install. |
I did this .....
Code:
PC NAME:~$ su And yes hat is what I want to learn "How to install files (or build or whatever you may called) from *.tar.gz fromat" and that is WHY I AM TRYING ./configure and still have the same problem, In short I want to and really need to learn how to install applications from *.tar.gz format and why ./configure return with "no such directory exists"PLEASE IT IS VERY URGENT I NEED TO DO A PROJECT WITH PIC KIT 2, don't bother much about flash player tell me first how to overcome this ./configure stuff  |
Just read Replay from STARTOTAK, I'm a hardware guy (progarmming microcontrller), I don't understand what the readme says I'm attaching it here, as for the download the readme mentions in "installation" section from microchip.com I allready have it. PLEASE GUIDE ME

your on a 64 bit system?you download adobes 64bit ?I believe its /usr/lib64...
As far as that program you dont use ./configure on it..its "make linux" "make install" Majority of times it will be ./configure make make install but not always..you need to read the readme files in source code folder..it will tell you what you need to know to build . If your going to build from source do you have build-essential installed??that will install basics you need build and compile.. |
i downloades source code and built it..you will need libusb-dev..look for it in synaptic..I built it but didnt install it..I have no use for the program..just make sure you have build-essential installed and libusb-dev..heres the make output..

O.K. first PICkit2 is a USB microcontroller programmer which I NEED to and HAVE TO install on my Debian, I have the following files from the microchip (menufacturer of PICkit2),.....
pk2cmd , pk2Devicefile.dat , pk2v023200.hex , ReadmeforPK2cmdLinux.txt , usbhotplug.txt, which file I should use to build and compile and how would I do that ? Just read the reply what Build essentials and how would I verify I have it ? |
ok..from the top..download the source code..extract it..cd into the directory..from reading the readmes you should read the usbhotplug.txt
"Please read the file 'usbhotplug.txt' before compiling and installing pk2cmd. It explains how to set up USB udev or hotplug rules so pk2cmd can be run in user mode. You must also have libusb (http://libusb.sourceforge.net) installed" then after you do whatever usbhotplug.text tells you to do. Then in source code directory you make linux then when its done you.. make install and then quoting from make readme.. "After successfully compiling pk2cmd, use su or sudo to run 'make install' as root. Both of these directories must be in your PATH variable. /usr/local/bin should normally be in your PATH by default. If you're using bash as your command line interface, edit the file .bashrc in your home directory to include: PATH=$PATH:/usr/share/pk2 export PATH Some similar procedure should exist for other command line shells; consult your system's documentation. You'll need to restart your window manager for these changes to take effect." and build-essential can be installed with apt-get apt-get install build-essential and like i said you will need libusb and libusb-dev..libusb should already be installed |
How to do this ????????
Quote:
I tried typing "usbfs-like devices" in Terminal window but doesn't work, btw I installed essentials and libusb successfuly. |
If you look into /etc/udev/rules.d your going to be creating a rule..its just a text file with .rules extension and name it foo so file would be "foo.rules"
then paste into it # usbfs-like devices SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'K=%k; K=$${K#usbdev}; \ printf bus/usb/%%03i/%%03i $${K%%%%.*} $${K#*.}'", \ NAME="%c" MODE="660", GROUP="foo" then save it then make another rule named "bar.rules" and paste in SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{idVendor}=="1234", \ SYSFS{idProduct}=="4321" MODE="660", GROUP="baz" RUN="/usr/local/bin/baz" SYMLINK+="foo" thats the way i read it and how its suppose to be done,,hopefully someone with more knowledge will respond to this post .. but you can still go ahead and build the program..and see if it runs..Im not sure of the names..if it suppose to be "foo" and "baz"..or those are just example names..like i said..hopefully someone with more knowledge will respond and set it straight other thing i noticed is ..source code you used was 1.12...I downloaded version 1.20..so you dont have latest source code for program.. source code i downloaded was on this page http://www.microchip.com/stellent/id...nt3_NextRow=31 |
I cannot copy the files in etc/udev/rules.d with cp command even tried to copy whole folder by cp -dpr but didn't work, I got > simboles in Terminal without christian@PCNAME $ ??????
I also try to install another software Quick Universal Simmulator by ./configure it worked and than I typed "make" and my PC got hanged when I restarted and tried to delete files of that software I got message "you can not delete it's parent directory so file cnnot be delete" How would I delete that ???, If the answer to second problem is time taking then please don't bother because first I need to install PICkit 2, Thx for help |
well..I didnt say to copy the directory..I said you needed to CREATE a rule..which is just a text file with .rule extension...you could use gedit or nano.. which are editors
su gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/foo.rules then copy%paste info into it and save it gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/bar.rules then copy%paste info into it and save or you could use nano nano -w /etc/udev/rules.d/foo.rules or if you dont want to do that you can make nautilus open up as root... in terminal enter su then type nautilus Im assuming your using Gnome..that is default desktop on Debian the reason you cant delete folders is because you probably ran ./configure make and make install as root you only need to be root to "make install" thats why you cant delete it Like i said..compiling from source is not the same for every program. On the other program all you had to do was "make linux" then "make install" But no matter what program the same applies ..you should have read the read me's to see what was required to build it..Could of required development packages you needed to install first.. |
well for 64bit flash there is a download from adobe
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html chrischristian you might also consider installing the 32 bit os the 64 bit can make things MUCH more complicated ,and seeing as there are not many 64 bit programs out there ... |
I think I should really try 36 bit but the problem is that this current 64 bit I got stragiht from net, I mean I just downloaded a small file and the PC booted from it (from the Hard disk, not any external media) and then it automatically downloaded the Debian from net, I want to do something like that with 32 but couldn't find any such thing that works like that for Debian Installed PC, I got some seprate files which takes toomuch time and the thing is that I don't have a CD writer or ZIP USB or a working Flopy drive,so I have to go by that HARD DISK BOOT WAY , is there any method that works with Debian Installed PC ? The page I got this 64bit was a single red (Debian) page with only single line in themiddle of it saying "CLICK TO DOWNLOAD DEBIAN"
BTW : I got this http://www.debian-resources.org/node/4 THOUGH I HAVE NOT UNDERSTOOD IT FULLY IS THERE ANY EASIER EXPLANATION ? |
I have done what is on http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl...en#boot-initrd
just one thing remains , How would I edit the menu.lst file ?????, I tried with alt+f2 and run, give the password and the message comes "Error occured during application contect your administrator":mad: |
|
I don't have flashplayer on amd64 Debian but never mind after few Editing job in Terminal and six hours of Download I am on Debian 2.6.686 that is x86 right ?, now I want libssl 0.9.6 file , my Synaptic doesn't list it and I coulden't find any working link for that so if you please provide me one I'll be thankful.
|
I think you'll have to look for OpenSSL (or openssl) in Synaptic.
|
Openssl is already installed but so why it asks for libssl 0.9.6 ??? and I just found my debian_version is 4 and kernel is Linux 2.6.18-6-686 i686. I got this when I tried to install flashplayer

whats your source list look like? do cat.like this
strat@razor:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list # Testing deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free #Testing Security updates deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib deb-src http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib # Multimedia deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main # Unstable Sid #deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free # Unstable Sources #deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free |
Here is mine
Quote:
|
well first..see how mine has contrib and non-free add that to yours
its trying to install a version of flash that requires older versions of lib's..so its the adobe-flash that is the problem first update your list by adding the contrib and non-free entry like mine..then go to this site and add a mirror for etch closest to your location not sure what part of world you are in.. http://debian-multimedia.org/ you can do this different ways..simplest way is to use either gedit or nano so from terminal su to get root then nano -w /etc/apt/sources.list then add it to your list and save it.. then apt-get update and then try to install adobe-flash it should grab it from the debian-multimedia repo |
or you could start off with a clean slate by going to debians site and downloading a net install image for i386 and install from there..
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ net install disc is about 140 megs bussiness install is like 40 megs..it downloads everything from net..it only has enough to get system up and connect to net to download everything else |
I have done this
Quote:
Quote:
|
try running apt-get clean to clean out you package cache..then apt-get update
If that doesnt fix it..add this... APT::Cache-Limit "8388608"; to.. /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/70debconf and I ment for you to add contrib non-free to your mirrors..not to copy my testing mirror into your list.I was just showing you where to add contrib non-free too.You can remove the testing repos you copied from my list.If you want to step up to testing its better to use mirror near you.. |
I tried Korea and Russia (I live in India), then I try deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main but all the time I got this ...
Quote:
BTW for the assembly language programming of microcontroller I installed "picasm" from Synaptic , now as I typed picasm in Terminal I got this ... Quote:
|
wow
instead of typing ./configure into the terminal, type ./flashplayer-installer
im sure theres some install notes in the directory, type < ls > to view all the files in the directory and look for a file named README or something similiar, type more README to view the file. |
Quote:
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/faq.php It wont effect installing packages.install the pubkey with dpkg -i and you wont see it again.. as far as the program,,try reading the manpage.. if you type man then the name of any app it will open manual for program so man picasm |
I have Debian etch 4.0, kernel 2.6 and still I don't understand I have these version problem ??????
Quote:
|
I dont know why your having that issue..all your repos are for etch..so dependencies should be worked out by apt..Its saying the version of lib's on your pc is older version than what flash plugin requires..how did you go from Debian 64 to etch 32 bit with 686 kernel?did you download net install of etch i386 and do a fresh install??did you do apt-get update then apt-get upgrade??
|
I did run apt-get update and upgrade !!!!!, Yes it was net install I followed http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst#netboot and this http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dist...ages/hd-media/
I did not downloaded the first file on the second link because it was not instructed to do so in the first link Sorry this should be the "first link " http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl...h04s05.html.en |
this is what you should have downloaded..either the net install or business size cd for i386
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ Just download netins iso..burn to cd and boot..it even has a graphical installer now. when you install..at point you will be asked to choose mirror for it to download ..choose location close to you do get best download speed..if at boot you select advance options,,you will see you have a option to install other desktop..If you prefer kde choose kde..if you prefer xfce choose it..by default Debian installs gnome as desktop |
I see that is a "testing" version shouldn't I Download a stable one ???, I will download at night as the speed will be better, hope it will work .
BTW: I have ubuntu 8.10 and ubuntu 8.04 LTS (both orderd from net, official ubuntu site) but none boot, I mean it does boot but after the ubuntu logo with sliding bar the screen just goes blank just one tiny desh keep flashing, I have waited for hours but nothing happens, may be because my ram is just 248 MB (I installed 256 but god knows what has happened ) I will see what a new 512MB costs me and then decide what to do ,Thanks for help |
most modern operating systems REQUIRE more ram than 256
if ALL you have is 256 ram then look at" knoppix" and "Puppy linux" http://www.knoppix.net/ http://www.puppylinux.org/ and a web browser will use a bit Seamonkey ( as i wright this) is using ~40 meg of ram, X is 40meg more ,nautilus is 30meg more . I am using 303 meg out of 1 gig of ram. |
actually with debian..you want the testing version..the stable version is old.its rock solid stable,,but all the packages are old.and unless your running a server or something..testing is what you want..youll find that the testing version is very stable..Im running Sid(unstable)..but you should stick with Lenny(testing)..and if you do have that little memory Puppy is a good choice..or Vector Linux..i actually have this laptop dual booted with Debian/Kde and Vector Linux light edition...Vector is based on Slackware..but right out of the box it will play flash,dvd's,etc...and its not a very big download..if you choose to install debian again..choose Xfce as your desktop..it's lighter on the system
Light Edition: Pentium 166 or better, 64MB RAM minimum, 1.8GB hard drive space for full system - more for your data. http://vectorlinux.com/ I would really consider Puppy Linux or Vector rather than debian for your pc..I personally liked vector more than Puppy..But Puppy is only a 94 meg download...try both.. |
BUT will PUPPY support Kicad and Euler or Freemat ???? I have to have those softwares....and of course there is my pickit2 I'll hope I'll find a way to work over that. Is there any Net inst for puppy ?
|
well..Puppy dosent have as many packages a Debian..debian has the largest package library..Im booted in Vector Linux right now..and i looked for those packages and there not there..And Puppy is a live cd that you can run completely from memory..or install..its less than a 100 meg download..i believe they recommen 256 of memory..not sure on that..you can probably get by with using Debian but would recommend using either XFCE as dekstop or you can try Lxde..those are both options for a low memory system like yours..
|
Yes I just tried Puppy it is really a puppy , it's just like a toy to play with not a full operating sys. but I managed to start flash player :) any way I'll either try the Debian you suggested or if I can afford now a 512MB RAM then I'll try ubuntus I have, thanks for help.
|
At last I succssesfuly run flash player, I been trying netinst all the time and that was the problem now I bought a CD/DVD W/R and have made a Debian Lenny CD it roks :) :), just that it doesn't cone with those packages, I have to download even Synaptic !! and ofcourse office and all that too, but it's very good, much better than Etch though little RAM hungry (in GNOME), I'm Downloading KDE Hope that will improve Speed. THANKS FOR HELP :), Hope my PicKit2 will also run on this but let me just get necessary pacakeges, now I will start a new thread.
