I have gcc and make installed in my conputer is there something missing to compile ?

Can you provide a bit mroe info:
What are you installing?
Do the compile instructions for that application say to use ./configure?
Did you "cd" into the source dir first?

In the source directory of the program you downloaded there should be a README and possilby an INSTALL file (they are usually in caps). Read them. Some programs don't use configure.

I am trying to install PHP 4.2 and I am using the configure instructions from 2 books on the subject.... (one is Apache Admin handbook) I just tried ./configure by itself (no parameters) and I got the above mentioned response...
I also tried
./configure --with-mysql=/directory where mysql is located/
with the same result.....
I will try to find an install file.........
