Exclamation ./configure no longer works

well ive just recently installed fc2 onto my box and got everything set up. i was able to use ./configure make and makeinstall when it was first installed. after installing a couple other rpms the ./configure no longer works. when i type ./configure into the bash shell, i get
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
im not sure what happened to make the ./configure no longer work. i was searching online and found that it might have something to do with a bug in ncurses or something, which is a possibility because i have just recently updated ncurses to ncurses-5.4-5. any help will be appreciated because as of know i am no longer able to compile any source code without the ./configure command working

even tho i dont fully understand the workings of configure and make/make install i think i know what the problem is here. ./configure isnt a bash COMMAND it is a program that you run from a directory (hence the ./). for example, if i was going to compile xine:

linux:/home/Mike/kde_optional # cd xine-lib-1-rc4a/

linux:/home/Mike/kde_optional/xine-lib-1-rc4a # ls
. CREDITS INSTALL m4 mkinstalldirs TODO
.. automake.diff config.sub debian install-sh NEWS win32
ABOUT-NLS ChangeLog configure depcomp intl po
aclocal.m4 config.guess doc libtool misc README
AUTHORS config.h COPYING include missing src

linux:/home/Mike/kde_optional/xine-lib-1-rc4a # ./configure

so all we are doing is running the configure program in the xine directory. the purpose of the configure program is to create a 'Makefile' so that the GNU c-compiler commands 'make' and 'make install' know some essential details about the system they are compiling and installing the software on. there is a make command that can be used to create a Makefile and configure script, i dont fully understand it but its something like 'make -f Makefile' but make sure you check the INSTALL and README text files for the program you are attempting to compile, and the man page for the make command using 'man make'.

also, one last thing, if a file that should be executable fails to do this, always remember to set it as an executable for ur user with:

chmod +x [name&directory_of_file]

hope i helped

linux:/home/Mike/kde_optional/xine-lib-1-rc4a # ./configure

thanks for the help, but thats not the problem. there something just altogether wrong with ./configure. if i were to type ./configure into the terminal to configure any source it doesnt work. i cant even get it to use it with any arguements so i know that for some reason something happened to it. make and make install still work becuase i can type them into the terminal and get make --help or what not but they are of no use without being able to ./configure the files. the command no longer works as well.
