Thumbs down ./configure error - "no acceptable cc found in #PATH"

Glad to be here. Seems like a nice site.

I am trying to install SAMBA. Upon running the "./configure --with-pam" command, I get the error "no acceptable cc found in $PATH".

Any ideas?

wow, isn't that the first possible error?

you'll not have a compiler installed. install gcc from wherever. if you know it's installed, make sure it's on your path and you have access rights to it.

were you trying to install as a user or root as well ??

I was logged on as root. How can I check to see if gcc is installed? Assuking it isn't, where can I get it?
