Configuration Tools (Http Server)

Basic Info:
Linux Distro: Fedora core 2
GUI: X-Windows, GNOME

I am using the version of apache that came with fedora core 2. There is a configuration tool called http server. This tool is a nice little GUI that modifies my httpd.conf for me in a nice easy way (I’m sure you all know this), but if I manually change the vales in my httpd.conf file the configuration tool no longer sees any values and won’t save any vales to the file that I put into it.

I want to be able to setup my file manually at first and when I want a quick change, the configuration tool would be wonderful if it worked. I ran into the same problem with the configuration tool and the samba files I was working with.

The configuration tool works fine if I never change any of the files manually. Currently it looks like it has to be all one way or the other. I can’t use both options. Is this meant to work like this? Is it just something with my setup? Is there a way I can use both methods of configuring apache?

Hi

What permissions are set on the files the configuration tool works on? Maybe if you edit manually (as root) and save the file, it somehow acquires root privileges which means the configuration tool won't run on the file? But this is unlikely.

Do you run the configuration tool as root?

What error messages (if any) does it give back?

Logically, I can't see any problem with editing the files both manually and via the configuration tool. (Guessing - don't use FC2 but RH9 where I configured Apache manually).
