Cool Config. of a pendrive DSL installation -works but the Backup utility gives me trouble

As a linux newbie I'm facing a series of adjustments that has to be performed. Even though I started trying to install Ubuntu, many months later learned that my system hadn't the minimum requirements so started to read & learn about other means of getting in contact with linux. The first that worked was installing DamnSmallLinux on an old 64MB pendrive. Later I stumbled upon a dual-boot arrangement with windows and this is what I'm using right now --Puppy Linux.
What I feel that is more urgent for me at this moment is didactic info on linux in general &, if related specifically to DSL, better.
One specific issue is communicating with the single ide hd. It has just one partition & filesystem=FAT32 in WIndows XP Pro. Any help on this will be highly esteemed, thanks.
