Config changes lost after reboot- Fedora or Ubuntu

Using PendriveLinux I'm trying to create a bootable working usb drive that will run Fedora or Ubuntu. I can get the drives to boot just fine, then I go about configuring the system using the GUI, connecting to my wireless network, my Bluetooth mouse, browser add-ons, etc. But when I reboot the machine all my changes are lost. Also, when I run software update, in Fedora 16, I get about halfway through the install of over 400 updates (282mb) and the machine hangs. Thanks in advance for your help!

Regarding changes being lost: It sounds to me like you're not enabling persistent storage when you create your live USB. I'd help more if I knew which program you're using to do this - pendrivelinux.com lists more than one, some of which don't appear to have a persistence option.

As for your machine hanging during updates, sorry but I can't help there.

I've found persistent storage to be somewhat flaky. Large changes (282 MB qualifies as large in this situation) tend to lead to a corrupt persistent storage file. My solution is to apply only a limited number of upgrades to a live USB installation. If I want a fully upgradable installation on a flash drive, I just grab a 4GB or larger unit and do a full install.
