Computer not shutting down

Hello

Am new to linux, when I tell it to shut down it goes thru a long list (shutting down applications etc) and shuts down my HD (Ihere it shutting down) but not the computer itself or the screen

I then have to switch it of by the switch at the back

P4 2 HD, machine very new which shuts down correctly when running XP (XP is on the SATA disc)

On a second machine which is just linux, it shuts down just fine

Any ideas

Trevor

Try this:
ctrl+alt+f1 >>
log in as root>>
shutdown -h now

see if that works

Same thing, exactly the same as when I use the quit user in K menu

I get all list of details that appear untill the last line "sending all processes the kill signal, power down"

I hear the HD going to sleep and then nothing, it like WP when I send the computer to sleep and not of

The writing is still on the screen and the comptuter is still on, it does not switch of

Any more ideas

It's probally that your power supply can keep your computer on for longer than linux is turning the switch off. It's so it doesn't go out in short power loses. Same thing on my box.
