Computer fan compatibility issues in linux
 

Hey, i'm new and this may sound very stupid but i have tried a ton of linux operating systems and none of them seem to work with my internal fan. Perhaps this i686 or i586 stuff (which i have no clue what is) is the problem and maybe i need to find a specific version. I am using an intel celeron processor

the fan may turn on, but not very often. whenever it does, it runs at a very low speed and it still overheats. i don't believe that my fan is software controlled, is there anyway to tell?

Not really sure what you mean. Does the fan not turn on? Does it run at one speed constantly?

If your hardware has a software controlled fan, then you need to load the module(s) for the sensors on your motherboard and use the appropriate software to actually control the fan. It won't happen automatically.

This should be in hardware.
 

Fans are almost always BIOS controlled unless you purposely install an application that does otherwise. This APPLICATION WOULD ONLY WORK ON THE ONE O.S that is purposely designed for and not work on a dual booter on two O.S's. You can install one of these applications on a linux computer but it does not look like it is worth the massive effort. I could not find a concrete answer to this but BIOS most likely controls a chip on your board that stays that way until you alter it through BIOS IF YOUR MOTHER BOARD IS CAPABLE OF THIS! This means that the control of the fan is static until you change it in BIOS. So if your fan is BIOS controlled it should not have anything to do with your O.S. unless you have a application installed that does otherwise.BIOS most likely 'Sets' registers on a chip that controls your fan if it changes with the temperature. :hattip:

I have never had fan problems with Linux and Intel, and I have run Linux on at least four computers with 100% Intel architecture.

For diagnoses, you could install GKrellm (if it's not already installed) and, in the GKrellM configuration, turn on the temperature sensor. IF the computer has a temperature sensor, GKrellM will then display the temp.

If you haven't done so, you might also clean make sure the vents are clean and that the fans are working properly and without obstruction. I have seen them blocked before.

figured out the problem. After tons (probably 30) distros, i have found one that has finally worked with the fans.
