Compress m the hd where ubuntu are installed

I would like to compress my hard disk (250gb) to keep my ubuntu distro and make one more partition of it NTFS so it will be readable also from windows to share files(cause my brother uses my laptop also and he doesn't want windows :/)

Is it possible? and if yes, how can i do that?

Thanks

Boot from a live CD. You can't modify a partition that's mounted without risking severe damage to the partition's contents.

A good CD to use is the System Rescue Live CD, since it contains grarted and many other useful tools.

Unless you have lots of data in your Ubuntu distribution, 20 to 30 GB should be sufficient for that system. (I run Ubuntu in a 16GB virtual system with no problems.)
