Complex Thumb Drive for Computer Repair
 

Been Using Ubuntu about two years to assist in computer repair. I have an Idea but i keep executing it incorrectly now i came to ask for help.

First, I want to create a bootable usb with crunchbang that i can also plug into windows and run the same installation (similar to Wubi utility). I have no problem creating one or the other but im not sure how to do both on one USB key(is it two different partitions?)

All attempts so far have ended in a USB that will either boot or run in windows but not both.

Second, I also want this same usb key to have a partition that i can access easily From Windows, mac OS, or Linux for file and application storage (i.e. running things like BelArc and MBAM scans from the USB without install).

I can partition the USB key just fine however getting apps that can run from the USB key on a partition that isnt primary is giving me trouble

Third, A suggestion for the best USB key for this job. Data transfer rate is key for quick boots. 16gb give me more than enough space to roll around and have plenty of storage.

I currently have a USB 2.0 8gb that is ok but seems slow on the boot. Loading the OS from install seems to take 4-6mins. Is there a USB 3.0 drive that is easily backwards compatible?

Finally i know this i kinda vague so please ask any questions you need and ill clarify as much as possible. The goal is a one shot solution that i can keep on my keyring to diagnose and fix anything on the go for quick money. Suggestions?

Just curious (and to bump your activity count), have you considered using a packaged solution (e.g., SystemRescue, etc.) and just adding your additional stuff to the USB drive?

Wubi is a windows program. I'd contact the wubi people to see how to edit it to your needs.

It may be possible to run qemu and make a live linux usb that can allow one to boot to and run from windows.

Might look at the how-to's at pendrivelinux but making qemu for windows works pretty easy. Not easy to use a standard linux install and use qemu so you need the live usb install.

Windows will only see one partition so it has the be the first.

I have found that some USB 3.0's do not work very well with a real linux install. Dunno why, I assume the conflict.
