COMPLETE NOOB!! 11.04 ubuntu and gnome command and install issues..please help!

Hi, I have just installed via ubuntu live cd the linux/ubuntu/gnome on an old satellite L20 173 I had laying around, primarily to install and play second life on, after trying to follow several other threads and youtube tutorials, I cannot seem to make any progress... the gui/os interface and desktop appear to be very different from mine (just a blue screen with "made with suse studio" in the bottom right corner.
Also the apt-get commands never seem to work (i think i read that this maybe the case for gnome?)
Basically i would really like to get some user functinality from this with someones help hopefully!
Pehaps could someone explain to me the best way to proceed to install second life and viewer or at least change my shell so i can follow the tutorials as n you tube!!

sorry for my obviously inexperienced noob ramblings and thankyou for your time in advance...

I think you will have better luck with SUSE tutorials, since it appears you are actually running that, and not Ubuntu. :)
