Compiz will not work on ubuntu 8.04 with 9600 gso running nvidia-glx latest version

Hello, all,

I have just reinstalled ubuntu, and now have time to play around with it again. I also got some new hardware, one of the pieces being a 9600 gso video card. I have gone through the standard procedure of getting the nvidia-glx package and doing the nvidia-xconfig with composite, glx, etc.

So, whenever I try to load compiz-fusion, I get the following error message:

"mike@mike-desktop:~$ compiz
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity"

Can anyone tell me what I need to do differently to get compiz up and running (I am not afraid of modifying xorg.conf manually)? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tekgek

See if this will help;
Code:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl
Then;
Code:

gksu gedit /usr/bin/compiz
Then add your driver to the Driver whitelist section.

okay, I tried the xgl fix, but ubuntu did not see the xgl server. Compiz continues not to work, but I think that the nvidia-glx package does not yet support the 9600 gso. Is there another debian based distro that will let me install the driver that are actually from nvidia directly, and that is relatively mainstream?

Thanks,
tekgek

Hey,have a little patience,don't change a distro so fast. :)
OK,see if this will help you.

Okay, I used the fix that you linked me to, and it worked, but I had to use the manual driver installation for envy. I am now running compiz on dual screen with emrald soon to be up and running. Thank you so much. I had some pretty bad misconceptions about what was compatible with ubuntu and what was not. I was at a dead end until you linked me to this. Thanks again :D

Thanks for helping out the :newbie:,
