compiling without root

For starters, I've only been using linux for about a month...
I have a redhat linux 5 (not sure how to view the exact version number) box that was pre configured and I don't have the root password for it, my problem being the machine has no pre-installed compiler, preventing me from installing MTOOLS to recover it.

Having full access to my /usr/home dir I figured it would be easy enough to install one but I can't seem to get it to work. I've followed the instructions from the thread discussing installing development tools and still can't get it to work. I don't have an installation CD as the machine I recieved came pre-configured. Any help is appreciated.

First step would be to provide a little more detail on your problem. Read the link in #4 in my sig below if you need help figuring out what would be good info to post.

Let's see...

You can't get what to work? The installation of the compiler you've selected to install or the compiler itself?

What thread discussing installing development tools? A link might appropriate, be creative if you don't have enough posts to post direct links yet.

Did you get any error messages? How about posting those?

If you just need to recover the root password, just boot into single user mode and overwrite the old password. Otherwise talk to the admin (the guy with the root password). You may be doing something against his rules (his system / his rules).
