I'm sure this has been asked before in some form but:

After a fresh install of Mandrake 9.2 I cant compile programs because ./configure gives
error "Cant find X libraries". This has happened in several programs.

After reading man pages and forums I think it has something to do with ld.so.conf file and command 'ldconfig' ..

My ld.so.conf looks like this:

/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/qt3/lib
/usr/X11R6/include (added myself, no luck)

and I used 'ldconfig' command after changing that file

Bottom line question is how can i set my paths right so that compiling works?

Your paths are probably fine; my guess is that you do not have the XFree86 development libraries installed. Look for a package (RPM) called xfree86-devel, or libxfree86-devel. Those should have the ones you need.
