Compiling new kernel

Hi,
I'm trying to load a new kernel onto my system. I've followed
the Linux-HOWTO website.

I have RH9 with kernel 2.4.20-6
I'm compiling kernel 2.4.20 from kernel.org (I have a patch that
doesn't work with RH's kernel)

make modules-install said it had nothing to do, though I
enabled loadable modules during make xconfig.

I copied bzImage and system.map to /boot and linked
vmlinuz and System.map to them. I rebooted, and when I type
uname -a I see that the original kernel is there!
How do I use the new kernel?

Thanx!!

i think if you have a new kernel you have to :
#make menuconfig
#make install bzImage modules
#make modules_install
After that you have to setting you master boot record
and copy bzImage to you /boot
cp bzImage /boot
config you grub.conf
end.

Yah I did all that, minus the grub thing which
shouldn't matter - it should load vmlinuz which
points to my new kernel image right ?

I proved the new kernel works and can boot

grub> kernel /bzImage.pker.24July2003
grub> boot
......
uname -a -> 2.4.20
