Compiling net-snmp from source

I am trying to install the net-snmp package.

Here is the link:

http://www.net-snmp.org/docs/INSTALL.html

This are the steps I have taken:

gzip -d net-snmp-5.2.5.1.tar.gz

tar -xvf net-snmp-5.2.5.1.tar

cd net

./configure

make

make test

make install

I didn't switchted to another directory. I ran the install straight off the tmp/download directory.

I am not sure what else is needed. I tried running the snmpd daemon but it is not recognized.

I am on Redhat ES 4 with no subscription to RHN. Is there another package that is readily I can use besides net-snmp? I am open to any.

John

You might want to consider switching to Centos. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed. It is free to download/update(unlike RHEL) and is binary compatible with RHEL. It is built from RHEL source binaries(proprietary bits, mostly logos).
