compiling kernel tutorial

Hi, where can I get a decent tutorial/documentation about compiling kernel and how kernel runs? Thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean by "how the kernel runs"; a good intro to its architecture is this: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...-linux-kernel/
