compiling from the source (Mandrake 10.1 / green user)

Ok... RH,Mandrake,SuSE and other distros are based on the red hat package manager (the rpms) -- this works fine over here. RPMS are good and clean but most of the new, good or nerdy scientific stuff I want don't come in maintained rpms. I've tried installing programs from the .tgz source with the 'make' and 'make install' routine but it has worked only once (in a KDE theme) and I always get this crazy last line by the configure shell script about *gcc sanity*. Any guidance? (after all it's all about free source-not free built rpms )...

Check to be sure that your compilers are installed e.g. c++, etc. That said, while I think it's useful to know how to install from source, I also think if your distro has provided a package management system, that would be the least amount of pain, use it.
good luck.
