Compiling from source
Im following a howto from genco.gen.tc/postfix_virtual.php and it specifically tells me to untar, ./config, and make many of the applications from the /usr/local/ directory using a normal user. When I try this I don't seem to have rights. I can't even untar it. I'm using fedora core 3. It say that I "must" do this under /usr/local and with a normal user.

I was wondering if it is ok to change the rights to the /usr/local directory to 777?
Thanks again.

Wouldn't it be better to log in or su to root, and then just cd to the /home directory and then do the untar there ???

John

It specifically says not to run with root privileges and to run the ./config and make within the /usr/local directory.

surely that's exactly what you'd be doing, i.e. download it into the /home or whatever, and then su - followed by cd /home/phil0024 and then the ./configure and make would be done in /home/phil0024 but they'd be done by root??
I may have missed something here though ???!??
regards
John

Wouldn't running the ./configure and make ran under su be the same as root. Why would the tutorial specify don't run under root and then show the prompt as a $
