Compiling Firefox with i686 optimizations?

Hi guys, I was just wondering would it be possible to compile Firefox with i686 optimizations? Would it make it much faster?
I've NEVER compiled anything before, so if you wouldnt mind showng me how to do it from the very start?

I've been told that the official Firefox comes with i586 optimizations, but mine came with Ubuntu 386, so im guessing mine will just be vanilla. Also, the reason i dont just go to Mozilla and download the official copy is because id like to learn to compile programs from source.

Thanks alot,
Jack

Can't say I've noticed Firefox being much different when compiled for my PC than it was when I just downloaded the generic version. YMMV, of course. . .

Dunno about recompiling it too make it faster, but if you google for firefox optimisation (oh, and if you're on a broad band connection), there is some stuff about modifying some settings - put "about:config" into the address bar line (instead of a URL and without the quotes) and you'll see what can be done/modified etc.

regards

John
