Compiling FC3 Kernel

Hope someone can help me out here.
I've have compiled the FC3 kernel with the standard config but I keep getting this error when trying to boot. I'm sure that all the correct filesystems are included in the kernel config.

kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (253,1)

In my grub.conf my rpm based kernel entry looks like this

        initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.27_FC3.img

I'm just wondering what the

initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.27_FC3.img

is, do I need to create one of these initrd files for my compiled kernel to make it boot correctly?

Happens if you have not compiled your file system into the kernel. You can either recompile your kernel with file-system support built-in or you can just make initrd image using mkinitrd command. Search google for making initrd image on a fedora core system. I'm not at my machine so can't help you with exact commands.
