Compiling extra features into PHP

I need to compile some extra features into php like espell and a few others.

Can this be compiled/added to an existing PHP or is a complete recompile and reinstall of php required?

Did you installed it from source?
If so, reexecute ./configure but this time adding the option --with-espell or whatsoever.
If not, I think you can install a package named php-espell, for instance.

Seems like the stuff I was after was installed after all, phpinfo gave me the syntax that was used to compile, I was looking for it elsewhere initially.

Thanks for the info though.
