compiling a program question

Hi,
I tried to compile mplayer in suse8.2. I did the following

./configure
make
make install

The only problem is I dont know where linux instaled it, and it didnt create any links i think. So does anybody know where the equivalent for "Program Files" in Linux is!

if not supplied with a '--prefix-path=<path>', ./configure usually puts files in /usr/local/

So, try looking for mplayer in /usr/local/bin/

If it was installed properly, all you have to do is type the program's name and press enter. There is a tool in kde for updating your menu, it searches for programs and puts them in the menu.

Open a terminal, and type:
/usr/local/bin/<mplayer's name>
If you run programs from a terminal, you'll see any error messages that pop up. Just clicking or typing it in the "Run Command" dialog will not show you the error messages.
