Compiling a kernel in Debian

Hi all!
Well let me just say that this is my first time trying to compile a kernel on my server but I have got just one question, how do I know what to pick in the makemenu section (the big blue menu ), so that I don't do something wrong. I mean I really don't know what needs to be enabled and what not, does anybody have a good tutorial on this? I basically use the server as a http, ftp and a gateway (iptables) server so I'm not all that picky but still i believe its better to ask than to start doing something that is wrong

Oh one more thing what kernel do you recommend? I'm currently using the 2.4 version would it be smart to switch to 2.6 now? I'm asking because a lot of people said that 2.6 was not meant for my server (i have no clue why it's a p4 2.0GHz, maybe perhaps that i don't use any graphical interfaces?...). Please advise.

Hope to hear some good answers, and thanks in advance,

Since you are still using Sarge which is no longer the current release, you might want to consider upgrading to Etch first. Instructions in the Release Notes will lead you to upgrade to a current (2.6) kernel before doing the actual upgrade to Etch, the curent release.

There are a ton of guides on the internet to compiling kernels in Debian. Here are a couple:
