compiling a C program and use of a BU-353

Hi, I'm new with Linux and am working with a device that has a very limited build. So, I've been making bash scripts and using scp to transfer it over to the device. I now have some more complicated things to do and need to use python or C. If I compile a C program does it effectively create a new file that I can transfer over the same way? What extension does it have?
Also, has anyone created a program that will parse the output of a BU-353. I just need the lat/long values in order to determine an azimuth to point. Appreciate all the help.

A BU-353 outputs NMEA sentences so search for Linux and NMEA and you'll find a number of programs which parse them.
