Cool Compiling 2.6 kernel in Redhat9

I want to compile the latest version of v2.6 kernal.... for that i downloaded the whole kernel from kernel.org and a couple of patches and a snapshot... also i downloaded some modutil tools and module init tools(3.0 version)
So is that the only basic i need..( i took hints from apost in this wesite on installing the kernel in RH9).....

I want to retain my old kernel so what is the step i need to take
