If the kernel source is installed, cd to the source directory, should be /usr/src/version. Su to root. Do $make menuconfig. Go through this and select everything you need for your system and save it.

Be sure to save your current working kernel and edit your bootloader file (/etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst) so that you will have the option of booting with the working kernel just in case your new one doesn't work.

Do $make && make modules_install && make install

I am repeating this because it's important. Edit bootloader file to make sure you have options for both new kernel and old working one yet again. If you're using lilo run the lilo command before rebooting.

Ok, no problem. One step at a time.

What exactly is the name of the file you downloaded?
