Unhappy Compilation error : cc: unrecognized option `-KPIC'

I am porting one application form Solaris to Redhat Linux.
I have specified KPIC option as
SUN_WS6_CXX_COMPILE := CC -instances=static -DSQLCA_NONE=1 -KPIC

When I tried to compile one directory I am getting the following error:

Using default ORACLE_CONNECT: mcs_owner/mcs_owner@MCSTEST
Using ORACLE_HOME: /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/client_1
Using default feature set: IB_XCAM
