compaq printer "stopped"

Hello all, Zach here with a first post. I'm two days into my first ever Linux experience with Ubuntu on a Compaq Presario 5724. Installation of Ubuntu 7.04 was trouble free.

My problem--printing.

I have a Compaq IJ300 printer. The driver (downloaded from sourceforge.net) is installed, or least the "Printers" GUI says it is. The computer sees the printer. It shows up as "Ready". But it will not print the test page. The job shows up, but it remains "Stopped."

And, under the printer's "General" tab, I see:

Status Ready: /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed
(That can't be good.)

A solid day of Googling, and I am still "stopped." Any help appreciated.

Zach

P.S.--If your answer is gonna take me in the "Terminal" window, it'll need to be quite specific due my inexperience. Thanks.

Found this link on your printer.

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...m=Compaq-IJ300

It appears it is not fully supported in Linux but please do not let that discourage you. When I first switched to linux I had similar issues with hardware compatibility. If you do stick with Linux I recommend checking before you purchase to ensure your hardware will be fully functional. But your printer should have some functionality. Download the .ppd file from the link and set your printer up again. That should be all you have to do. Hope it helps

Thanks AMISH for your fast reply.

Quick question before I proceed--does it matter WHERE I put the driver after downloading? That is, can it just stay in my desktop folder? Or must it go somewhere else?

Thanks again,
Zach

Sorry this reply was not as fast. I travel during the week so I am usually only mildly helpful on the weekends. This link should help.

Hey, thanks. Weekdays are pretty busy for me, too.

I will review and get back to you.

Okay amish, I checked that link--no help. I already installed the printer via the GUI--it was easy and I thought it was going to work.

Here's what I think: I have the .ppd file in the wrong place.

"/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed" implies to me that the foomatic rip program is not finding what it's looking for, i.e. the driver.

With Ubuntu, I can't drag and drop into the "File System." I think I need to send the driver file there via the Terminal/Command window somehow with the SUDO command--and I just don't know how to do that yet.

I basically need "over-the-shoulder" tech support.:(

If you look at step 3 in the link in the bottom right corner of the gui there is an option to install a driver. After you select that option direct it to the.ppd file you downloaded. That should be all you have to do.

Okay, I did that. If I do it again, it says the driver is already installed.

I'm considering uninstalling/reinstalling the driver, although how to do that isn't self-explanatory.

It just says the print job is "Stopped." I could really use a "GO!" button. :)

Bump on this; I could still use an answer

Bump; this is an old printer, but it can work...

Has anyone EVER made a Compaq IJ300 work?

See thread--driver is installed; printer is "job-stopped." Sometimes, it's "stopped" with Foomatic-Rip failed.

People asking about using the Compaq IJ300 historically get no reply, aside from "paperweight." Anything appreciated.

Thanks.
Zach
