Unhappy Compaq Armada 100s

Hi

I have a Compaq Amarda 100s AMD k6-2 533Mhz 96M Ram, 5GB hdd, pretty low end computer.

Having reformatted the hdd from previous W2K installation. I have been trying to install some distro including Easylinux 2.000 and Mandrake7.2 on this laptop for days (yes those distro CDs are old as well). I have had better luck with Easylinux I even got my Pcmcia nic DFE-670TXD working,,,, but it guaranteed to hang after using it a few minutes in KDE, don't know why. So I tried Mandrake7.2 but during installation it keeps failing at the install package stage saying cannot install such and such packages.

Did anyone successfully install any distro of Linux into the model of laptop? Or, is there any reason it keeps hanging (is it overheat)?

Any idea is appreciated

James

Re: Compaq Armada 100s

I have installed FreeBSD on one, but I am having troubles configuring Xorg. It previously had Debian Sid on it and it worked fine. I already have a PC with Debian, so I thought I would give FreeBSD a try and learn some new things.

You can still get more memory for it. I have 192. That can make a difference. I don't know about 96 Mb, but with 64 Mb, it was nearly impossible for me to run Knoppix, or Debian with Gnome or KDE. With 192 Gnome and KDE run fine, even with Mozilla or OpenOffice.
