Command Line Screen Size

So I've installed Knoppix to my hard drive and things work great, but half the reason I got into using Linux was to learn the command line. I can do that in an xterm window, but half the fun is to run Linux without the gui. The problem is that the autodetect didn't quite get my monitor/videocard right. KDE works perfectly, but when I Ctrl-Alt F2 (or which ever one I go to) I can't see text at the top of the screen or the bottom because it goes beyond my monitor.

What I need to do is reconfigure my monitor settings so that they are correct when I run the command line. Where should I be looking and what should I be doing?

Thanks.

Well thanks, but the problem is that I'm not runing off the Knoppix cd anymore. It's basically a Debian system now (installed to the hard drive, as I wrote). So how do I get it right now?
