Command line mail program.

I want to set up my box so that I can check my e-mail as soon as I first login to linux using the 'mail' command.

Which free e-mail providers are compatible with the 'mail' command?

How do I configure the settings for 'mail' (i.e. username, login, pop3 server)?

My box is permanently connected through a LAN, so I always have a connection.
