Command line configuration
 

So I installed RH 7.3 with gnome, then Mandrake 9 with KDE and then RH8 with gnome. Every install seemed to be about 80% fine but always there was some little thing that didnt work right.

So figuring I needed to get to KNOW Linux from the command line I installed RH again with just the black screen and the little white blinking thing.

Since then, I've spent some hours CDing my way around the directories and ls-ing their contents and I'm getting to feel friendly with the thing. Its not sexy ... but it is starting to be a bit familiar.

Now I'd really like to Lynx (it is a browser - right?) my way onto the web but I cant find a way to configure my NIC to talk with the network and open the connection. Can anyone enlighten me?

Uh, how would you normally do this in the gui? Or have you ever (in linux)?

What card do you have? Print your pci info to a file for easier viewing, and then post it up here:
lspci -vv > lspci.output

Which release of RH did you end up with?

Configuring the NIC in the GUI
 

I won't pretend to be expert in all GUIs but taking Gnome for example:
Click the "Start Here" icon
Click the "System Settings" icon
Click the "Network" icon
Click the "add" button to begin your NIC configuration.

When you have finished configuring the NIC go back to the first "Network" screen and press "activate". If you've got the configuration right it will tell you. (It also tells you if you havent got it right). There is no need to reboot.

also if you do get lynx running, you might want to try links2 as well, which can actually show full graphics on webpages like any conventional X based browser.
