Command buttons for HP keyboard to work for Ubuntu

I have an HP simplepass pavillion laptop. I have just changed my operaing system to Ubuntu 12.04. My laptop conrols such as volume, brightness, play/pause, etc. are all on my keyboard (the Function *F* keys). Now that I have Ubuntu I am unable to use those keys, they do other things now such as right clicking or bringing up the home screen. Is there a way to remap those buttons to do what they were meant for? I know how to remap letters and numbers and such but not with controls or commands such as the volume or video. Any help for this Ubuntu newbie would be great!
