Coming back to Mandrake 9.1 Linux.

I've decided to install linux again and give it another shot seeing as I have 11G spare on my 2nd hd. I'm about to format the partition using partition magic 8. The question is do I format it as 'Linux Ext 2' or 'Linux Ext 3' ?
What's the difference between them?

Thanks in advance ;)

Btw you'll get more daft questions from me i'm sure:newbie:

Ext3 is a journaling filesystem. That makes it safer. It keeps a record of what's changed so that if there's a problem (like if the power goes off or something and the system is shut down in the middle of doing something) it can (hopefully) be fixed when you reboot.

Have you already used partition magic to do the partitioning for your drives? If not, why not leave it out of the picture. Mandrake has Diskdrake, which is one of the better partitioners out there, and you may avoid some pitfalls associated with using PM.

Glad to see you coming back :)

Thanks. Yes I did use PM and I chose Ext 3 as we had a powercut last week :(
I've installed Man 9.1 and managed to get my internet working!!! I just need to set up the fonts in konqueror cos I can hardly read the forum :D And I need to remember where things are.

I resized mine to 9 minimum and 11 medium. Seems to be a good balance. I noticed when I used 9.1 that recompiling the freetype2 module with hinting enabled actually did improve things a bit (no real need, but it was fun trying it)

Recompiling... sends shivers down my spine :D

3 things I need to do and unsure about...

1, Install drivers for my geforce 3 ti200
2, find drivers for my optical mouse cos it jumps and skips about :(
3, recompile my kernel (Not sure if I really need to do this but I read/think I read doing it will optimise my setup)

Time to search the forum and pray ;)
