Usually the command ls is an alias with a bunch of options: for example on my system I have

alias ls='ls -N --color=tty -T 0'
Here the --color=tty is the part giving the colorized items. Check your options as normal user and put the relevant part in the options of root. You have to define the alias again, for example by putting it in the .bashrc file for root.
