Cnmbook network settings - wont load webpages?

Hi guys, I have to admit I am completely computer illiterate so probably made a mistake in buying a 2nd hand Cnmbook which runs linux. But now I have it so I hope you can help...

I have tried to connect it to free wifi etc at McDonalds and am having difficulties. It finds the connections, then says that Wifi is connected and acquires the IP address etc.

However, when I go to the web browser it won't load any sites as it says 'server not found' and to check my network connection.

I think this has something to do with incorrect network settings. I have tried various combinations, to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Can you ping the internet by ip address? Try this
Code:

ping 75.126.162.205
ping linuxquestions.org

If it works for the numbers but not for the words you have a problem with domain name resolution. Check the contents of /etc/resolv.conf. It sounds like you are using a dhcp daemon to get your network connection settings from the wifi access point. If it's not setting the dns correctly you need to look into the documentation for your distro to find how to configure your dhcp daemon (I can't help you with that, I dont use dhcp)
