Closing the Lid on a HP Notebook DV5 under Debian Lenny
 

Hello World!
I have just installed Debian "Lenny" on my new HP Pavilion Notebook DV5-1120US, and I found that when I close and re open the lid the screen is still blank. There is nothing I can do to revert the situation, unless I turn off the machine.
I've tried doing:
# echo ? > /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS
with ?= 1,2,3,4
but nothing seems to bring back the display; and of course I don't want to try every natural number > 4 until I get the right one (if there is one!)

Debian is notoriously bad at these laptop things. I consider myself pretty good with linux, but getting Debian to work with suspend/hibernate/lid events is a bitch. One of my laptops works, the other doesn't. Your problem sounds like the computer is going in standby or switching off the screen but doesn't come back. Look for VBE restore, and switching to virtual terminal before doing other operations. Also look at http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki for help. I know it's not written specially for HP but it could be of help.

I've found a "quick" workaround for the problem meanwhile. Just disabling KPowersave, I was able to reopen the lid without losing the display. As a consequence, I'm going to change Kpowersave for GNOME-Power Manager, and setting "do nothing" in the option about the lid. It works and I can also control my battery status.

Still searching for a "better" solution ...

you never really said what effect you were trying to obtain, are you trying to always have the power stay on when you close the lid? or are you trying to make it hibernate and turn back on when you re open the lid? If its the latter, i'm not entirely sure thats possible, with my ubuntu install on an acer, i need to manually hit the power button in order to get it to power back on. that doesnt bug me though.

Yes, I would like to make the Notebook sleep or hibernate while the lid is closed.I've tried hitting several buttons in order to make it awake, but the dilplay never turned on. Now that I've changed to GNOME-Power Manager I can close the lid without losing the diplay when I turn the lid on again, but the notebook is either sleeping or hibernating.

well, thats the same power management i have, and it works, so im guessing if you're not waking on power button, than your laptop just doesnt like being managed like that heh, did you ever have windows on this system, and did it work properly then?

The Notebook came with Windows-Vista and sleeping worked finely-fine. The problem reduces to make the display alive when coming back from sleeping. I think my notebook suffers from laziness !
Any ideas about waking up displays?

Hello, I have the same problem with a HP DV7 (same as the DV5 but with a 17 inch screen). That problem disapear when I install nvidia drivers.

Good News!
I downloaded the latest BIOS from www.hp.com and installed it through Windows-Vista. Then I could make the notebook sleep an resume with no problems on Linux !!
You should do the same, the NV drivers are just a happy workaround I suppose.
