Closing serial tty device

I am having trouble configuring a serial line.

using:
Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (FiveStar) for i586
Kernel 2.4.22-10mdk on an i586 / ttyS1

"agetty" is configured on that line with a remote terminal device connected.

Almost everything works OK. I have modified "stty" settings give appropriate handshake signals and no data is lost through buffer overflow.

BUT...

When the shell or other process is closed, what remains in the buffer is discarded.

To test this I will flood the output, then immediately exit before all the data has been output to the terminal and ...

the end of the buffer is lost.

What I want is for the process and the device to remain open until it is happy that all data in the buffer has been output.

How do I do this?

Thanks foo,

My understanding of "-opost" is that it suppresses ("-") "output postprocessing"

I think that means: no tabs will be converted to spaces, NL converted to CR/LF's etc (as specified by other parameters) on the data output to the device.

I may be wrong...

Are you saying it affects how/when the device is closed?
I just think it turns on/off a filterering/translation feature of the line discipline.
