Cloning Linux CentOs
 

Hello,

Can anybody recomend me an application which can clone my linux distribution with all the applications, so I can use the exact image on some other computer.
And is it possible that this clone image to work on a computer with different hardware specification?

To take this in reverse order:

Well, its possible but its far from guaranteed, which is why it is usually a bad idea unless you know that the two computers have exactly the same hardware specification.

Depending on what you are trying to do, something like kickstart, which reproduces the installation sequence with the same settings (in other words, installs the same apps, but goes through hardware detection for the hardware at hand) might be a rather better idea.

You can use Ghost for Linux for cloning the drive. It works fine. But make sure you have same hardware specifications while cloning. Though it will not cause any harmful affects but as suggested, not a good idea. If the hardware are drastically different then all the drivers will have to be loaded to match the hardware. As said, you can use kickstart method of installation for the purpose.

If you need to backup and install a Linux image to dissimiliar hardware(s), a company called Cristie Software do an app called Cbmr which you can use to do just this, I have used it and find it fairly simple to use.

I know that you are a CentOS user but PCLinuxOS has a remastering tool built in, and users are encouraged by the community to create their own clone live CDs/DVDs - useful as a backup measure or for installing your sysyem on another computer. Ans it works! I gather it is incorporated in Mandriva also.

Whether or not it is possible to wrestle it onto other distros - I don't know.

Ubuntu and derivatives have a package called remastersys. I have never used it myself.
