Clock problem

Ok, I just installed Mandrake 10 on a laptop to get familiar with it before committing my desktop to it. Big initial problem: The clock time is four hours slow. When I try and change it, the system crashes. I've never used any Linux distro before and have no idea what I'm doing. Any idea what's going on and, more specifically, how I could fix it?

im a newbie too man. a couple months ago when i first installed linux it restarted the computer and booted up for the first time. with windows when ever i installed xp pro or 2000 i would do the usual (install drivers, install important programs, fix screen resolution). but when my comp booted up for the first time it was ready to go and i just sat there staring at the screen with a blank look on my face lol. and the weed my friend gave me didnt help either.
