Clean install, now what
 

I'm new to this linux thing. Main reason i'm trying out linux is cause every forum (game server forums) i visit, i've been told windows sucks and managing a DS. So here i go with questions.
just installed mandrake 10.0 without a hitch. Now what do i do. I can get online but slowwwwwwwww loading. just using default browser konqer or something like that. mozilla just as slow. can't use cd-rom, floppy. Everything i download to set up my DS (dedicated server) is zipped. So right now i'm feeling blue =(. I have no clues on commands or where to get them all i know is you type them in the dos like promt, right.

Oh yeah also eventhough i can get online when i check my network setting it says not connected. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

as far as your network connection, without more info, i'm not sure. Are you connected through a router, wireless, how are you connected. What kind of hardware do you have? etc

As for unzipping the files. I would search here or google how to extract gz, tar, bz2, etc. That has been answered many many times.

I can get a 4939.9 kbps on cnet bandwidth meter with my windows machine.

Everything OK for just beginner,but why Mandrake 10.0.Now we use Mandriva 2006.For unzipping,untaring... you may use Ark or Fileroler.And you have to learn a lot about Linux.

didn't know there was 2006. i have file roller installed but everytime i try to use it, it goes crazy on me. it would say "no file selected" or the directory looks like this: /home with the file i want grayed out. is 2k6 better than what i got. one of my friends know quite alot about linux, just that he lives like 4 hours away. but i appreciate everyone replying so quick.

I would go with 2006. Since Mdk 10.0, there has been 10.1, 10.2/2005LE, and now 2006. Many internal changes and improvements. (To the user, Mandrake/Mandriva works like it always has, just better. ;))

I would like to add a more encouraging and less pedantic response. First, welcome to Linux. :)

Second, I like to tell newbies that a lot of what they know about Windows applies in Linux with a GUI. I don't know which GUI you are using with your Mandrake system but the two big ones, Gnome and KDE, have a lot of features that are just like Windows. You already know more than you think about working and playing in Linux. :)

A word about high speed internet. I also have Comcast and I love it. You have to keep in mind that the bandwidth/speed that you have available may not be fully utilised by whatever web site that you are connected to. I have speeds from some sites are at 7Mbps. Other web sites don't go over 2Mbps. The machine at the other end may or may not feed the data to you as fast as Comcast can transmit it.

The information that you provided about your equipment was excellent. We also need to know what GUI you are using so that we can know what approach to take with checking your network. Try to find out if you have KDE or Gnome or something else. Both GUI systems have some good graphical applications to check your network and to do other system things. It's also possible that Mandrake has some tools for system configuration that I don't know about.

Lastly, just for a sanity check, I would recommend that you download a live CD distribution such as Ubuntu or Kubuntu. These live bootable CD distributions do a great job of detecting and configuring your network. You will be able to see if Firefox or whatever can get better network speed than the Mandrake that is already installed on your disk. And don't think about getting the latest Mandriva. The Mandrake distro that you have already installed is fine.

thanx for all the replies guys (and gals just in case). but it took me forever to find where to download mandrake 10.0, the question i have now is where do i go for 2006. the gui that i am currently using right now is between gnome and kde. I don't know how to do a ftp install. I was able to install mandrake cause i downloaded the iso files only. Can someone point me to a mandriva 2006 iso download? oh and one other thing, my cousin sent me a knoppix cd (knoppix 3.2 version 2.2) but when i try to run it my screen goes black and this thingy about my video display pops up "not optimum mode:1280 X 1024 60mhz". but it doesn't matter what i have my video setting at, it still gives me that error.

About knoppix at boot time press F1 and will see options.
About ftp - you have to install ftp server during installation from CD or from Control Center after that.I thing ftp checked by default.

Although I have installed 2006 on a box here, I also use mdk 10.0 on my main machine. It should not be slow just because it's an older version...

Whoa, whoa! What's the problem?? If you are connected, then everything is OK, right? Who cares if it says that you are'nt ? :jawa: I say yo should get a book on MDK and :study: . Those books don't cost much. I got one from Helion fo an equivalent of 2$.

well, bin, the problem is i am not browsing the web like i should. feels like i'm on dail-up. But for now i guess i'm going to have to wait for my friend to come up from santa clara or somthing like that to help me figure this out. and for the books part of it, yes i can read them, buy them. But i see no point cause i wont understand the terms and lingo within. just in case you are wondering i have many books by cisco linux networking already. from bigginers guide to professional.

you will understand the "lingo" because they will teach it to you. The real way of learning is to get your hands dirty and just get in there. Use the search function in this forum and use google...LOTS. Whatever problem you may have, more than likely someone else has already had it and the answer has been posted somewhere. Good luck
